Advolly Richmond: A Short History of Flowers
Have you ever wondered about the stories behind your favourite garden flowers? How and why, they came to be there or why some cultivars go in and out of favour? Each flower has a story, and in this lecture Advolly Richmond takes you on a global tour of some intriguing, surprising and enriching tales and scenarios. From stories of exploration and unrequited love to excessive hybridisation and botanical piracy, Advolly will bring the histories of our most-loved flowers to life.
Advolly Richmond grew up in Yeovil and is a plant, garden and social historian now based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. A fellow of the Linnean Society, and a Champion for the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. She teaches Garden History at the Department for Continuing Education at the University of Oxford.
Advolly’s book ‘A Short History of Flowers: The stories that make our gardens,’ was published in 2024. She presents garden history features on BBC`s Gardener’s World, produces The Garden History Podcast and is a Scribehound Gardening columnist.
